Odyssey White Hot XG #8 Center Shaft Putter Review

I have been playing with an old banged up bulls-eye putter since the 1980s. I never saw a need to upgrade since I have a pretty good short game and grew up playing that old putter, but I finally decided to try something new. In haste I initially purchased a semi-mallet style, with an offset shaft and a tilted plumber-neck hosel, because they seemed to be popular and get good reviews. However, I learned that if you’re used to an “old school” putter, switching to the more modern and forgiving design is like learning to putt all over again. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a modern day bulls-eye. I considered buying the Wilson Augusta putter, but couldn’t find one to try locally. The Augusta is also brass and I wanted to take advantage of a composite head to get a better feel and feedback. With the exception of having the ability to switch-putt (as I did with my bulls-eye), the center shaft Odyssey is perfect. My local golf pro told me those putters with offset shafts add forgiveness, by keeping the hands ahead of the club, but I found it irritating, and the angel of the hosel to be unintuitive (though this is of course personal preference, and depends on ones stroke). With the Odyssey XG #8, the center shaft is simple, intuitive, and allows me great control. My putting has never been better. This club is also well balanced and weighted perfectly. The feedback is excellent, though the sweet spot is very defined, and I can definitely feel a miss – it will still go straight, but makes it much harder to control the speed. Overall I’m very pleased with this purchase, and have retired my my old putter to the archives.
